The Power of Community

Communities welcome and resettle individuals and families who have been forced to flee their homeland. They arrive in the US in search of the American Dream, aspiring to a better life for themselves and their children —one rooted in freedom, liberty, security and opportunity.

I recently visited an Emergency Shelter in Massachusetts that provides housing for over 30 families. While there is an agency providing support, this remarkable team of almost 40 volunteers have been supporting the families since they arrived. And it has made all the difference.

An incredible team of volunteers operate ESL classes, assist with grocery shopping and medical appointments, and, most crucially, they offer a degree of support and safety previously unknown to these families throughout their dangerous journey.

The Conversation Class includes board games and various activities designed to help parents enhance their English proficiency. Meanwhile, the children are engaged by amazing adults as their parents study.
